Jaime Toledo in El Mercurio: "There are a lot of competing interests that are slowing down the energy transition a bit"

The president of the Renewable Generation Association (AGR A.G.), Jaime Toledo, spoke with El Mercurio about the challenges and solutions surrounding Chile's energy transition.

Toledo emphasized that one of the main obstacles is the need to adjust the regulatory framework, as the current one was designed for a market based on hydro and thermal energy, rather than the present reality, where non-conventional renewable energies play a significant role.

"It cannot be that for 3,000 hours a year in the spot market, we get paid zero, because energy is not worth zero. This regulatory model must be adjusted," Toledo stated, warning that this distortion affects the sector's sustainability and long-term competitiveness.

Additionally, he pointed out that large renewable energy generators are subsidizing the operation of PMGD projects, which impacts market stability and investment in new clean technologies.

Another key issue addressed in the interview was the problem of renewable energy curtailment and the urgent need to comply with the Transmission Law, enabling the efficient integration of clean energy into the power grid.
